Kits get compared on piece count. Ten pieces beats six, apparently. This is the wrong metric and it leads people to buy badly.

What actually separates a good kit from a bad one is how the restraints fasten and release.

Velcro is the cheap option and it fails in both directions. It comes undone under sustained pull, which undermines the point, and it snags and pulls hair painfully at exactly the moment you want a clean release. Velcro also degrades — it holds noticeably worse after a dozen uses.

Clips and carabiners are the best of both: fast to attach, fast to release, and they let you reconfigure a kit rather than being locked into one arrangement.

Rope is not a beginner fastening. It tightens under load, a comfortable knot can become a circulation problem as weight shifts, and a loaded knot can be impossible to untie in a hurry. If you buy rope, buy safety shears at the same time and keep them within reach every single time.

What you actually need first

Less than a kit contains, usually. A first session needs:

Wrist cuffs that release fast. Padded, wide, buckled or clipped. Width matters — narrow straps concentrate pressure and bruise.

A blindfold. The highest-impact, lowest-risk item in the whole department. Removing sight changes everything about how touch registers, and it costs almost nothing.

A tether. Something to attach cuffs to. Under-bed strapping is the practical answer for most homes: no fixings, no drilling, stores flat in a drawer.

Safety shears if there's any rope. Non-negotiable.

That's it. Blindfolds, gags, clamps, paddles and floggers are all additions to a foundation that has to work first. A £39.95 kit with good cuffs beats a £257 kit you're intimidated by and don't open.

Before the first session

Agree a safeword before anything starts, not during. And agree a non-verbal signal too — if a gag is involved, a spoken safeword isn't one, so the restrained person holds something they can drop.

Never leave a restrained person alone. Not to answer the door, not for a minute.

Check circulation every few minutes. Cold hands, tingling, numbness, colour change: release immediately. Nerve compression injuries can take months to resolve.

Nothing around the neck. Collars in our range are decorative. They are not attachment points, and nothing should ever tether to one.
