Why stretch lace is the right fabric here

Two features here do the real work, and both are adjustment points:

The back tie. A halter that ties rather than clasps sets its own strap length. That's the difference between a neckline that sits where you want it and one that sits where the manufacturer decided, and it's why halters work across a wider range of torso lengths than fixed straps do.

The front lace-up. Same principle across the bust. Loosen it and the plunge opens and the fit widens; tighten it and it holds closer. You're setting the fit rather than hoping the pattern matches you.

How to not destroy it

The washing machine. Even on delicate, the drum abrades lace and the agitation stretches it out of shape. Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent — the whole job takes four minutes and it is the single highest-return habit in lingerie ownership.

Heat. Never a tumble dryer. Heat destroys elastane, and elastane is what makes stretch lace stretch. Once it's gone, the garment is a size larger permanently and never goes back.

Hanging wet. Water is heavy, and a wet lace piece hung on a hanger stretches under its own weight. Lay it flat on a towel, roll the towel to press the water out, then dry flat and away from a radiator.
