Travelling with toys: batteries, locks, and the customs question

Three things decide whether this is uneventful: where the battery goes, whether the thing can switch itself on, and whether the country you're flying to allows it at all. The third one is the one people never check and the only one with real consequences.

Lithium batteries go in the cabin. Not the hold.

This is an airline safety rule rather than a modesty one, and it applies to everything with a rechargeable cell — laptop, e-cigarette, toothbrush, vibrator.

Rechargeable devices containing lithium-ion cells should travel in cabin baggage, because a thermal runaway event in the cabin can be dealt with and one in the hold cannot. Loose spare lithium batteries and power banks are cabin-only under airline rules almost universally.

The practical upshot is that if you pack a rechargeable toy in your suitcase, you are packing it in the wrong place, and a hold bag pulled for a battery is a bag opened by someone else.

Non-rechargeable, battery-powered toys are simpler. Take the batteries out and pack them separately. This is also the fix for the vibrating-suitcase problem, which is the actual reason most people end up in a conversation at baggage reclaim. Check your specific airline before you fly. Watt-hour limits and quantity rules vary, and the airline's own dangerous-goods page is the authority rather than anything you read here.

Security screening, honestly

Airport security staff see these constantly. It is not remarkable to them and it will not be discussed loudly.

If a bag is pulled, it's almost always because the shape is dense and unfamiliar on the scanner, not because anyone has recognised what it is. A bag that gets searched at the desk in front of other passengers is the situation people dread — the fix is to pack it somewhere it can be lifted out quickly rather than dug for.

Travel lock is the specification that matters most. A toy with a travel lock cannot switch itself on in a bag. Without one, a button pressed by a shifting laptop is how a suitcase starts buzzing on a carousel. Check the product page; if it doesn't say, take the batteries out or pack it separately.

The part that actually matters: destination law

Several countries prohibit the import of sex toys outright, and in some of them confiscation is the best outcome — fines and detention are on the table. Parts of the Gulf, and several countries in South and Southeast Asia, restrict or ban them entirely. The rules change, and blog posts age badly.

Check your destination's customs website, or the UK government's foreign travel advice for that country, before you pack. This is not a formality. It's the one item on this page with consequences that don't end at the airport.

Domestic and intra-EU travel is not an issue.

Hotels, and the discretion details

Pack it in a pouch, not loose. Every toy we sell ships with one, and it stops a housekeeping surprise as much as it protects the silicone.
